Lithium carbonate

The commodity form in which most lithium is traded and the lithium source for LFP and mid-nickel cathodes. Lithium carbonate equivalent, LCE, is the unit the industry uses to count lithium supply whatever its chemical form.

Abbreviation
Li₂CO₃
Also called
LCE, lithium carbonate equivalent

Supply chain and regulation: an example situation

Carbon footprints can be compared only with compatible boundaries and functional units.

Read Lithium carbonate alongside Lithium brine in this context. Lithium-rich salt water pumped from beneath the salt flats of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia and concentrated in evaporation ponds over a year or more. Direct lithium extraction aims to pull the lithium out chemically in days instead.

How lithium is recovered, as a labelled cutaway with numbered steps.
Lithium: how the unit works. Drawn by the Lemonergy recycling study for 100 returned NMC 622 packs of 60 kWh through mechanical + hydrometallurgy. The numbers match the steps below. Redraw it for your own fleet in the recycling study ↗
  1. Concentrate: lithium arrives dilute, in 586 kg of raffinate, so water is evaporated first.
  2. Precipitate: soda ash (sodium carbonate) is added to the hot solution and lithium carbonate crystallises out.
  3. Filter, wash and dry: 2653 kg of lithium carbonate, holding 498 kg of lithium, is bagged: 85% of the lithium that reached this step.
  4. Bleed: the mother liquor, 87.9 kg, takes the rest of the lithium and the sodium sulfate out of the circuit.
